Actress Kirsten Dunst, most famous for her role as Mary Jane in the original Marvel "Spider-Man" franchise, responded to a tweet from Reuters referring to her simply as "Spiderman's [sic] girlfriend."
This past August, Dunst received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. At the time, Reuters heralded the news with a now-deleted tweet that summed up her entire acting career — which includes her powerful turn as Claudia in 1994's "Interview with the Vampire" — as the girlfriend of a Marvel superhero.
“Kirsten Dunst, best known for her role as Spiderman’s [sic] girlfriend, receives a star on Hollywood Walk of Fame," the post read, as reported by Fox News.
Though fans of Dunst were largely outraged by the tweet, the actress remained silent. But speaking on an upcoming episode of "The Talk," Dunst directly responded to the tweet while promoting her upcoming Showtime show.
"I don’t really look at Twitter and stuff, I’m not really a social media girl," she said. "But I was looking for the show and everything. I read it, too, and I was just like, 'Yeah that’s pretty s****y.' You know what I mean?"
"It was a very ignorant tweet and it was done probably very carelessly, by a man," she added.
Kirsten Dunst represents a bit of an anomaly in Hollywood: She began as a child actor with films like "Jumanji" and "Interview with the Vampire" before transitioning into a teen star with films like "Bring it On" and "Drop Dead Gorgeous." By that point, many actors would fade, but Dunst kept pushing onward by eventually landing deeply challenging roles like "Marie Antoinette" and "Melancholia." Most recently, she gave a hilariously twisted performance as a Minnesota housewife-turned-criminal in season two of the FX series "Fargo."
As noted by Fox News, the tweet from Reuters came on the heels of an interview on Sirius XM in which Dunst said that her movies often gain appreciation over time.
"Sometimes you're like, it'd be nice to be recognized by your peers,” she said. "I always feel like nobody — I don’t know, maybe they just think I’m the girl from 'Bring It On.' Of the things that people like, remember when 'Marie Antoinette' — y'all panned it? And now you all love it. 'Drop Dead Gorgeous'? Panned. Now you all love it. I feel like a lot of things I do, people like later."
In 2008, Dunst entered rehab due to her ongoing battle with depression.
"It was a good six months before I decided to go away,” Dunst said at the time. "I was struggling, and I had the opportunity to go somewhere and take care of myself. I was fortunate to have the resources to do it. My friends and family thought it was a good idea, too."
"There’s been a lot of misrepresentation about what is going on in my life, and it’s been very painful for my friends and family," she continued. "Everyone feels like they have to defend me. They hear the rumors, and it puts them in a defensive position. Now that I'm feeling stronger, I was prepared to say something."
