5 Warning Signs of Sun Poisoning You Should Know

You probably know how it feels like to be sunburned, but have you experienced the hazardous effects of sun poisoning?
Sun poisoning is simply a case of severe sunburn. Unlike regular sunburns that only affect your skin, sun poisoning can make you sick.
You can suffer sun poisoning if you expose yourself to the sun for too long or don’t wear protection. As you would expect, the effects are worse for people with light skin.
Unfortunately, drinking water and keeping your skin moist may not be enough to treat sun poisoning. Sometimes you need to see a dermatologist.
That’s why you need to look out for these sun poisoning warning signs.

1. FEELING DIZZY OR LIGHTHEADED

Staying in the sun for too long can make you feel dizzy. Additionally, prolonged sunlight exposure leads to dehydration, which can trigger dizziness and lightheadedness.
Drinking water can help combat this effect. You may also want to lie down and rest in the shade until you feel better.

2. SKIN BLISTERS

If you’ve only experienced redness and itchiness after sunlight exposure, realize that things could get worse.
Sun poisoning can cause painful blisters. Even worse, these blisters may result in infections when they become open wounds.
Experts recommend applying aloe vera gel and avoiding the sun until the blisters heal. See a doctor if you have blisters on your hands or face.

3. FLU-LIKE SYMPTOMS

Sun poisoning can cripple your immune system and consequently trigger flu-like symptoms. If you’re feeling achy all over your body after spending time in the sun, chances are you’re suffering from sun poisoning.
It’s important to mention that the sun doesn’t poison your body, but it triggers an inflammatory reaction that can weaken your immune system.

4. A PRICKLY SENSATION ON THE SKIN

Regular sunburns make your skin sensitive, but sun poisoning is even worse. It can lead to a prickly sensation every time your skin brushes against your clothes or when you touch it.
Taking painkillers can help ease this sensation. Also, apply aloe on your skin and take cold showers.

5. HAVING A FEVER

It’s normal for your body temperature to rise while under the sun but if it stays elevated even after you get to the house, it could mean you have a fever, especially if you feel ill and have chills.
Don’t hesitate to see a doctor if you suspect you have a fever.
As you can see, sun poisoning can have disastrous effects. Avoid exposing your skin to UV light for too long without protection, and be quick to see a doctor if the self-care tips I’ve shared above don’t work.
