Now that CA Gov. Gavin Newsom has survived the Golden State’s recall vote, he owns political capital that he intends to spend … at his constituents’ expense of course.
The Patrick Bateman doppelganger will surely not be altering his behavior, but beginning October 7th, Los Angeles County public health officials will require proof of a COVID-19 vaccination for employees and patrons at indoor bars, wineries, breweries and nightclubs.
By November 4th, proof of full vaccination will be mandatory, according to the county’s Department of Public Health. Those officials also strongly recommend the same precautions for indoor restaurants, but so far are not mandating proof of vaccination for them.
Somehow, coronaviruses can differentiate between alcoholic beverage consumption and food and soft drink consumption.
The county also will require proof of full vaccination or a negative COVID test within 72 hours for attendees and workers at outdoor events with at least 10,000 people, including Dodgers, Chargers and Rams games. The requirements for these so-called mega-events also include theme parks such as Universal Studios Hollywood. That condition also begins October 7th; conveniently about a month after football reemerges in the American conscience and the oligarchy that is the NFL clamors to put butts in seats.
“This is a reasonable path forward that will position us to be better able to break the cycle of surges,” Dr. Barbara Ferrer, the county’s public health director, told the Board of Supervisors during a Wednesday meeting.
She said that county health officials “believe that targeted vaccine mandates are now a very important strategy for quickly raising vaccination coverage across our county and ending the pandemic.”
“This modified health officer order aligns with the continued need to reduce risk of transmission and increase vaccination coverage,” said Ferrer.
It can be assumed that the tired and yet somehow renewed measures will not apply to Gov. Newsom’s favorite haunt, the upscale French Laundry restaurant.
In implementing vaccine passports, Los Angeles joins other cities including New York, New Orleans, and San Francisco in requiring proof of vaccination. New York’s requirements for bars, restaurants and gyms went into effect on Monday, with business owners facing fines of thousands of dollars if they fail to enforce the strict requirements for both patrons and staff.
Los Angeles has taken other strong measures requiring vaccination, including a vaccine requirement for all public school students older than 11 years. At the going rate of government imposition, look for that to be reduced to 11 months in the near future.
Newsom’s survival as governor in the state’s recall effort can be attributed in no small part to mainstream media’s portrayal of any attempt to oppose or even question his leadership.
A January, 2021 article from Cal Matters read, “When is a constitutionally outlined petition campaign to remove an elected leader actually a “treasonous” effort to subvert the democratic process? According to the California Democratic Party, when Republicans are on one side of the campaign and Gov. Gavin Newsom is on the other.”
“Some of the same individuals and groups who were encouraged by California Republican leaders and (who) attacked the people’s house are also engaged in a recall effort against Governor Gavin Newsom right here in California,” said party chairperson Rusty Hicks. “This recall effort, which really ought to be called ‘the California coup,’ is being led by right-wing conspiracy theorists, white nationalists, anti-vaxxers and groups who encourage violence on our democratic institutions.”

In 2003, CA Gov. Gray Davis was successfully recalled after voters grew tired of rolling blackouts due to his gross mismanagement of the state’s energy infrastructure and overspending of taxpayer money, among other things including gun legislation. In the special election he was replaced by Austrian-born body builder and action film star, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Arnold denoted himself as a Republican at the time, served the remainder of Davis’ term and won reelection for a second term from 2007-2011.
He is a beneficiary of American capitalism and freedom, but no longer involved with politics, he has appeared to revert back to his socialist roots. Bravely taking on Americans who doubt or resist COVID restrictions in their cities and towns, he appeared on CNN in August to announce “I think people should know there is a virus here. It kills people. And the only way we prevent it is to get vaccinated, to wear masks, to do social distancing, washing your hands all the time, and not just to think about, ‘Well, my freedom is being kind of disturbed here,” he mocked.
“No! Screw your freedom! Because with freedom comes obligations and responsibilities,” Schwarzenegger insisted.
“Screw your freedom” seems to be the trend in blue states like California, a state known historically for its trend-setting influence.
