Entrance polling from the Iowa caucuses on Monday evening showed that voters were prioritizing which candidate would be more likely to defeat President Donald Trump in the 2020 election.
The survey showed that voters prioritized the pragmatic choice over policy agreement by nearly a two to one margin.
63 percent of those surveyed said they prioritized beating the president, while only 35 percent said they prioritized a candidate with policies that were in agreement with their own.
The emphasis on beating Trump might be a sign that voters in the Iowa caucus will prefer a "safer" candidate to one with more liberal political policies.
The Iowa caucus is seen as extremely important for candidates to raise money and show early support in the primary race.
Other results showed that healthcare was the greatest concern among caucus voters, with 41 percent saying it was the most important issue. 21 percent said climate change was the most important issue, while another 16 percentage replied that income inequality was their issue.
The RealClearPolitics average of polls showed that Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) was leading the pack in Iowa, with Joe Biden coming in at second place.
