The social media platform Twitter has suspended the campaign account of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) over a video of liberals screaming epithets at his home in protest.
McConnell campaign manager Kevin Golden called Twitter out in a statement decrying the action.
"This morning, Twitter locked our account for posting the video of real-world, violent threats made against Mitch McConnell. This is a problem with the speech police in America today," Golden told the Courier-Journal.
"The Lexington Herald-Leader can attack Mitch with cartoon tombstones of his opponents. But we can't mock it," he added.
"Twitter will allow the words of 'Massacre Mitch' to trend nationally on their platform, but locks our account for posting actual threats against us," Golden continued. "We appealed and Twitter stood by their decision, saying our account will remain locked until we delete the video."
Golden was referring to a nickname assigned to McConnell by liberals who were trying to blame him for recent violent attacks. Some criticized the use of the phrase because it also could be taken to advocate violence against the Republican leader.
The video in question was taken from a protest by Black Lives Matter Louisville leader Chanelle Helm where protesters yelled expletives and advocated for the killing of McConnell.
"Just stab the motherf***er in the heart, please," said one protester in the video.
The Team Mitch Twitter account has been lauded by many on the right for its innovative and clever use of social media and memes in support of McConnell's political agenda.
