Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) said that she needs to win the presidential election in order to keep President Donald Trump from "demonizing" transgender people, including an 8th grade boy who she knows personally.
Gillibrand made the comments will speaking with the National Center for Transgender Equality Action Fund.
"When a little boy in my son's school came out as transgender, we made sure he knew he was loved and supported. This president wants to demonize him," she tweeted, with a link to a video of their interview.
"I've always believed in rights for transgender Americans," said Gillibrand in the interview.

Our trans community deserves a president who will always fight for them. https://t.co/pejWA0SsMA
"But it really hit home in the last few years because there was a transgender boy in our community. And I knew this young man through his entire grade school," she explained.
"I watched when he was in fifth grade cut his hair short. And in sixth grade he dyed his hair blue. In seventh grade he renamed himself," she added.
"And in eighth grade he told our community that he wanted to be identified as a boy," Gillibrand continued.
"And this was during the time when President Trump was really demeaning transgender people," she added. "And he was dismissing them, telling kids couldn't decide what bathrooms they wanted to go into.
"And as a mother my fury as a mother at the president just grew exponentially because he was demeaning and demonizing this young boy in my own school community," she concluded, "and I couldn't tolerate it."
Critics of the transgender agenda have questioned whether young children have the emotional and intellectual tools to navigate their feelings about their gender.
