Joe Biden's latest head-scratching comment is the result of either an incredibly selective memory, alarming forgetfulness, or blatant lying on the topic of Russian election interference.
"If [Trump] wins reelection, I promise you, there'll be no NATO in four years, or five years," Joe Biden says about President Trump pursuing relationships with North Korea's Kim Jong Un and Russia's Vladimir Putin over US allies. pic.twitter.com/6ZlU1Pwkng— New Day (@NewDay) July 5, 2019
Biden was on CNN's "New Day" when the topic of Russia came up, and Biden talked tough about how Russia would not, and did not, interfere with any elections under the Obama-Biden administration. He said:
"Look at what's happening with Putin. While Putin is trying to undo our elections, he is undoing elections in Europe. Look at what's happening in Hungary, look what's happening in Poland, look what's happening. You think that would happen on my watch or Barack's watch? You can't answer that, but I promise it wouldn't have, and it didn't."
Much has been made about Russia's efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election, and Biden's comments fully ignore the fact that all of those interference activities occurred while Barack Obama was president and Biden was his vice president.
In fact, the main substantial takeaway from special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation was that Russian intelligence officers "launched a concerted attack on our political system" and used cyber techniques "designed and timed to interfere with our election and to damage a presidential candidate."
Biden still leads in the Democratic primary polls, holding on to his perception as the candidate who would be best equipped to beat President Donald Trump in the 2020 general election.
He has not inspired confidence with his public comments however, suffering from high-profile miscues such as touting his civility with segregationist senators, getting blindsided by Sen. Kamala Harris during the first debate over his desegregation positions in the 1970s, and flip-flopping on federally-funded abortions.
