Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) shut down a New York Times writer who tried to attack him over an alleged lack of support for 9/11 victims Tuesday.
The writer, Wajahat Ali, was quickly corrected and forced to delete his original tweet and apologize for what turned out to be totally false information.
"Anytime a Republican says they are 'patriots' ask them if they voted to fund the 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund," Ali wrote on Twitter, in response to a clip of Jon Stewart bemoaning the low attendance of lawmakers at a hearing. "You know who's for it? Ilhan Omar. You know who hasn't sponsored it? Dan Crenshaw.
@DanCrenshawTX, I hope you do the right thing. If not, why aren't you?"

Crenshaw fired right back.
"Hey 'journalist,' maybe you should check your facts," Crenshaw replied. "I am a co-sponsor. Nice try though."
Crenshaw wasn't done. He also shared an x-ray image of his skull, showing the evidence of the injury that cost him an eye while he was serving in Afghanistan.
"Also, 'patriotism,'" Crenshaw wrote above the image.

Ali was forced to admit his mistake, but still tried to salvage the situation by changing the subject to comments Crenshaw has made about Omar.
"Thanks for letting me know," Ali wrote. "I'm glad you did and I have no problem correcting and updating the record with facts. Now try it with your comments about Ilhan Omar. You'll feel better. Sincerely, a fellow patriot."
In a follow-up post, Ali apologized for his mistake.
"I deleted this b/c Dan Crenshaw supported the Fund in May after being a holdout," Ali wrote with a screenshot of his erroneous tweet. "Apologies to him for the tweet. I have no problem admitting it & correcting the record with facts. For those trying to 'own' me, especially as you still promote 'alternative facts,' enjoy your Tuesday."I deleted this b/c Dan Crenshaw supported the Fund in May after being a holdout.
