8 Reasons to Start Using Bergamot Essential Oil

If you have never smelled the fresh, uplifting scent of pure bergamot essential oil, you’ll definitely want to get your hands on some. The fragrant oil not only smells heavenly, it also has many healing properties, too. Here are some of my favorite reasons to love and use this delightful essential oil:

HAIR GROWTH

In a study published in the journal Food Science & Nutrition, researchers found that bergamot essential oil was helpful for promoting hair growth. Dilute in a carrier oil and apply to affected areas of the scalp for best results.

ANXIETY

Bergamot is helpful at alleviating feelings of anxiety and stress. In one study, researchers found that bergamot essential oil quickly and effectively improved feelings of anxiety.

BONE HEALTH

Bergamot essential oil can help boost the strength of bones. In the Food Science & Nutrition study, researchers found that bergamot increases bone volume.

DEPRESSION

study published in the medical journal Current Drug Targets found that bergamot, as well a lavender and lemon, were effective for depression. In this study the researchers found that the oils stimulated the brain to release two brain hormones, which are collectively known as neurotransmitters—dopamine and serotonin.

MOOD BOOSTER

Uplifting oils tend to boost mood and energy levels. Most of the citrus oils are considered uplifting.

NATURAL ANTI-PAIN MEDICINE

Research published in the medical journal Mini Reviews in Medicinal Chemistry found that bergamot can be helpful for pain. That’s because it contains a potent compound known as beta-caryophyllene (BCP), which is a cannabinoid similar to those in cannabis. Unlike cannabis cannabinoids, BCP does not have psychoactive effects. So, you can rest assured that you’re reaping its anti-pain benefits without getting high.

SKIN COLLAGEN

Forget expensive serums and toxic chemical skin products, research in the journal Food Science & Nutrition found that bergamot essential oil can give your skin’s collagen a boost. Collagen is a protein in the body that is essential to healthy skin, tendons and ligaments; however, it can decrease as we age, so using natural remedies to give your collagen a boost can help you to maintain healthy, youthful skin.

BLOOD PRESSURE

As if there weren’t enough reasons to love this heavenly citrusy aroma, research found that topical application of bergamot essential oil had the ability to reduce high blood pressure (both the diastolic and systolic pressure, for those science-nerds like me). That’s great news considering the massive side-effect lists of so many pharmaceutical drugs.

Using Essential Oils

There are many ways to use essential oils, including diffusing them or mixing them with water and spraying into the air for the purpose of inhalation, applying topically, or ingesting. However, not all oils are suitable for ingestion so please use only those indicated on the label for oral or internal use.
Regardless of which method you choose, make sure you select high quality, pure, undiluted essential oils. While you may end up diluting the oils yourself, most of the oils on the market are diluted in less-than-desirable oils. High quality oils cost more than the cheap varieties on the market but are worth the increased price. Many cheap varieties can also contain synthetic versions of the oils, which offer no therapeutic value and may actually be harmful. But, worse than that, many cheap oils are adulterated with solvents used during the extraction process or toxic pesticides used in the growing process of the herbs from which the oils are extracted.
It is best to dilute bergamot essential oil to prevent skin reactions; however, after diluting the oil in carrier oil, always conduct a 48-hour patch test on a small inconspicuous part of your skin to determine whether you have any sensitivity to the essential oils. Do not discontinue any prescribed medications without the guidance of your physician. Avoid using bergamot essential oil during pregnancy unless you have approval from an expert. Use essential oils with caution and the advice of a qualified natural health practitioner if you are suffering from any health condition.
Additionally, some oils like bergamot can cause photosensitivity—that means that they can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Avoid using these oils within a few hours of direct sun exposure.
