The saying goes: ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away.’
But, research has proven that perhaps it’s time to give the old adage a tweak and replace apple with the wonder-fruit that is the humble avocado pear.
It’s not only delicious, but it turns out avocado is a powerhouse superfood that is incredibly nutritious and has beauty, health and even sexual benefits.
Discover the four amazing benefits of avocado:
Avocados can function as an aphrodisiac
OK, so not a typical aphrodisiac, but it does help get the spark going.
Avos are rich in saturated fat, a vital component for the production of testosterone. They are also high in Vitamin E and B9, which helps one maintain youthful vigour and energy levels.
Avocados help curb your apetite
Containing around 22g of fat (fat that is good for your heart) per fruit, avos work wonders at slowing down the process of emptying your stomach, meaning eating an avo a day will help keep you fuller for longer, says registered nutritionist Cynthia Sass.
A recent study found that eating half an avo with every meal “resulted in a significant boost in self-reported satiety and a reduced desire to eat for up to five hours”.
Avos are also high in fibre and low in carbs, which helps promote the weight-loss process.
Avos are good at protecting your heart
Loaded with monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), avocados work at reducing the bad cholesterol levels in your body, while upping the good cholesterol that helps lower the risk of heart disease.
“Avocados are also a source of potassium, a nutrient that helps reduce blood pressure by acting as a natural diuretic to sweep excess sodium and fluid out of the body, which relieves pressure on the heart and arteries,” says Sass.
Avos contain antioxidants that can protect your eyes
Avos contain high levels of lutein, a natural antioxidant that are important for for good eye health. Pervious studies have shown how avocados have been linked to a dramatically reduced risk of cataracts and macular degeneration in older adults.
