Which cities are healthiest? WalletHub dove deep to uncover which cities fit the bill of being healthiest in the nation. Healthcare, food, fitness, and green space were explored for 174 locations to arrive at the healthiest cities. Which city earned the top spot for 2018? Read on.
10. Denver, Colorado
Denver ranked toward the top for fitness and food in the Wallet Hub study. The city also received a grant as part of the 2018 U.S. Mayors Challenge to install pollution sensors at 10 public school campuses, CBS Denverreports.
9. Irvine, California
This city ranks second for healthcare and does pretty well devoting green space to residents. Irvine also has one of the lowest premature death rates and one of the highest percentages of active adults in the WalletHub study.
8. Honolulu, Hawaii
Despite a Hawaiian classic being fried Spam, food in Honolulu ranked high for healthy fare. Honolulu also ranked decently for healthcare and green space. Additionally, living on “Aloha time” may lead to less stress and longevity, The Huffington Post reports.
7. Scottsdale, Arizona
You’ll find the fittest folks in Scottsdale, as the city received a top ranking for fitness. Scottsdale also offers plenty of sunshine and warmth, along with a number of outdoor activities such as the Scottsdale Culinary Festival and the Arabian Horse Show.
6. Burlington, Vermont
Burlington ranked closer to the top for healthcare and fitness in the WalletHub study, plus folks in Burlington love their fruits and veggies. The city was first in the nation to run completely on renewable electricity in 2015, Eco Watch reports.
5. Washington, D.C.
With lots of green space, Washington, D.C. is also a “green” city, banning the use of styrofoam and adding a five cent fee for plastic or paper bags distributed with any purchase. It’s a good thing D.C. has a high number of running and walking trails per capita because gym memberships seem to be on the pricey side.
4. San Diego, California
Known as “America’s Finest City,” San Diego is also one of the happiest cities in the country, according to a National Geographic Fellow study, NBC San Diego reports. Study author, Dan Buettner told the local NBC affiliate that the happiest cities emphasize healthy food, are pro-cycling and offer plenty of green spaces for recreation.

If you are a foodie, you are going to love Portland. The city ranks first in having the most healthy restaurants per capita in the WalletHub study and has a high percentage of active adults. Where should you dine when in Portland? This handy list can help guide both you and your taste buds.
2. Seattle, Washington
You’ll find plenty of green space in Seattle, plus the city has tons of healthy restaurant options as well. Seattle has the highest percentage of physically active adults plus a high number of walking and running trails per capita.
1. San Francisco, California
The Golden City is named as being healthiest by WalletHub, as San Francisco ranks at the top for food and green space. Plenty of fruits and vegetables are consumed in San Francisco and you’ll easily be able to find a decent running or walking trail anywhere in town. Access to outside fitness opportunities is important as gym memberships are expensive in San Francisco.
“San Francisco ranked first mostly because of its food and green space rankings,” WalletHub Analyst, Jill Gonzalez said to The Cheat Sheet. “The city has the highest number of farmers’ markets, vegetarian restaurants and fitness centers per capita, as well as the third lowest percentage of obese adults at just under 20%. San Francisco provides its residents with the highest number of running and walking routes per capita, as well as great quality of parks.”
