8 Obvious Signs Your Blood Sugar is High

Blood sugar fuels cells and keeps us energized. However, too much of it can cause tiredness and increase risk of diabetes.
Most times, controlling blood sugar levels comes down to what you eat. Eating high-carb and sugary foods can raise your blood sugar beyond desired levels. Lucky for us, the body produces insulin, which helps control blood sugar. 
Sometimes the body isn’t able to produce enough insulin to lower blood sugar. When this happens, blood sugar levels stay elevated all the time. This results to increased risk of heart disease, kidney failure, loss of vision and so on. You can avoid all these health problems if you watch out for these 8 signs of high blood sugar.

1. Peeing frequently

When blood sugar goes to the kidneys, it attracts more water, which in turn causes frequent urination.
If you notice that you’re urinating frequently but haven’t increased fluid intake, get your blood sugar levels checked. 

2. Feeling tired all the time

Even though blood sugar gives us energy, too much of it can make you tired. A lot of glucose is wasted when blood sugar is high, and as a result, you feel tired.
Peeing frequently makes things worse since it causes dehydration, and as you may know, dehydration causes fatigue.

3. Increased thirst

The body becomes dehydrated when the kidneys can’t filter out glucose. This not only increases thirst but also lowers function of different organs.
When you pee frequently, the body loses water and thirst kicks in. This causes a viscous cycle since drinking more water will make you pee more.

4. Blurry vision

Too much blood sugar in the body makes the eye lens swell, which consequently blurs your vision. But your vision will go back to normal once you lower blood sugar.
It’s worth noting that chronic high blood sugar can damage your vision permanently.

5. Slow-healing wounds

High blood sugar can affect your nerves and blood circulation, making it harder for blood to reach wounds or bruises.
See a doctor if you notice that cuts and bruises are sticking around longer than usual.

6. Unexpected weight loss

For those looking to lose weight, this might sound like a good thing but it isn’t. Weight loss triggered by high blood sugar is not healthy. You see, when body cells don’t receive enough glucose, they’re forced to burn muscle and fat for energy.
Muscle loss slows down metabolism and causes tiredness.

7. Brain fog

As I mentioned earlier, blood sugar fuels our cells and gives us energy. When the body has too much blood sugar, it becomes wasted and the body doesn’t get the fuel it needs. This usually leads to brain fog and lack of focus.

8. Bleeding gums

Many things including vitamin C deficiency can cause bleeding gums, and high blood sugar can contribute to it as well.
High blood sugar levels cause accumulation of bad bacteria in the mouth and this increases chances of gum bleeding when brushing or flossing.
Changing your diet can help lower blood sugar levels. Eat more fruits, veggies and whole grains. And reduce intake of processed foods. It’s also advisable to see a doctor if you have these symptoms.
