Babson Boulders (14 Pics)

Roger Ward Babson (July 6, 1875 – March 5, 1967), remembered today largely for founding Babson College in Massachusetts, was an entrepreneur and business theorist in the first half of the 20th century. He also founded Webber College, now Webber International University, in Babson Park, Florida, and the defunct Utopia College, in Eureka, Kansas. Millionaire philanthropist Roger W. Babson hired immigrant stone cutters to inscribe boulders in Dogtown Common with words of inspiration during the era of the Great Depression. In addition, numbers were inscribed on rocks near some of the old Dogtown Common settlement sites to identify their location in respect to a guide that was put out on the area.

The Best Healing Drinks for When You’re Sick

What’s the number one thing you are supposed to do when you have a cold or the flu? Well, yes, rest. But what else? All together now: Drink plenty of fluids. But you probably don’t want to be chugging frappuchinos, right?
Some fluids are more medicinal than others. Here are 8 proven elixirs that will help you get better faster when you come down with the sniffles:

ORANGE JUICE

Ah, good ol’ o.j.! Research on orange juice’s infamous vitamin C content and its effect on the common cold has been mixed. While it seems vitamin C won’t actually repel the cold and flu, it may still shorten its duration. This may be because vitamin C is concentrated in immune cells and is depleted quickly when the body is attacking an infection, so it is important to keep replenishing your stores if you want to get better quickly. Fresh orange juice is also chock full of vitamins and natural sugars that can help keep your energy levels up through your recovery.

ELDERBERRY JUICE

On the other hand, there is plenty of evidence to support the benefits of drinking elderberry juice when you have a cold or the flu. In fact, research has shown that black elderberry juice can actually inhibit the growth of the influenza virus, meaning it can be a great preventative measure as well. Elderberry juice can reduce sinus congestion and may shorten the duration of the flu by up to 3 days. Look for elderberry juice or elderberry syrup to keep on hand for when you start feeling a little under the weather.

REAL GINGER ALE/GINGER TEA

Why real ginger? Fresh ginger actually fights off respiratory viruses and can soothe an unsettled stomach. With barely any real ginger, your average can of ginger ale isn’t going to help much. However, certain artisan bottles of real ginger soda could provide sweet support. If you prefer tea, steep some fresh slices in hot water with raw honey for near immediate relief.

HERBAL TEA

Whether it is ginger, hibiscus, mint, chamomile, lavender, nettle or an intoxicating blend thereof, herbal teas are tasty, comforting and uniquely medicinal. Nettle has cleansing properties; lavender and chamomile are incredibly relaxing; hibiscus is flavorful and vitamin-rich. Choose the tea that best suits your needs and sip throughout the day.

HOT WATER WITH LEMON AND HONEY

Raw honey itself is hugely medicinal, especially if it is truly raw and contains bits of comb, royal jelly and propolis. It is an immune-superfood. Lemon is alkalizing and cleansing for the body, as well as vitamin-rich. Mix these two in some hot water and you have a simple yet highly effective cold buster.

HOT TODDY

Could a shot of whiskey do you good when you have a cold? Possibly. Whiskey contains loads of antioxidants that can support your body through a cold. However, don’t drink more than a shot as the alcohol is dehydrating and tough on the liver. A hot toddy with hot water, a small shot of whiskey, lemon and raw honey is the best option.

BROTH

There is a reason why chicken soup was your grandmother’s cure-all. It is a powerful natural medicine. Chicken contains the amino acid cysteine, which helps thin mucus in the lungs. Bone broth, which is simmered for 8 to 12 hours, delivers an even higher density of vitamins and minerals, so be sure to keep some on hand. Homemade vegetable broth can also work to soothe sore throat, prevent dehydration and fight off inflammation. You can never have too many veggies.

WATER

This shouldn’t need to be said, but water is the most important drink on this list. Your body cannot heal if you are dehydrated, so drink up. Room temperature or hot water is probably the best choice for a cold.

6 Vitamins and Minerals That Boost Brain Function

We all want a healthy brain. But the truth is our brain function will decline as we age.
Even though aging is an inevitable process, you can use vitamins and minerals to prevent cognitive decline. According to one study, adequate intake of B vitamins can prevent memory loss and lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
Eating a healthy plant-based diet can give you most of the nutrients essential for a healthy brain. But you may need to supplement if you can’t get all these nutrients and minerals from your diet.
With that said, here are 6 vitamins and minerals that boost brain function.

1. VITAMIN C

Not only does vitamin C strengthen your immune system, it can also help prevent cognitive decline.
Scientists at Oregon Science and Health University found that some brain receptors stop working when vitamin C is removed.
Henrique von Gersdorff, co-auther of the study said that, “because vitamin C is a major natural antioxidant, it may be that it essentially ‘preserves’ the receptors and cells from premature breakdown”.
Eat plenty of fruits and veggies to get vitamin C. Taking supplements can also help you reach the daily recommended intake of 90 milligrams.

2. VITAMIN B1 (THIAMINE)

Thiamine deficiency, which is common among alcoholics, can harm your brain. In fact, research shows that intake of thiamine can improve brain function of patients with Alzheimer’s.
Foods rich in thiamine include seaweed, beans, nuts and seeds. It’s important to mention that alcohol interferes with the absorption of this nutrient.

3. OMEGA 3 FATTY ACIDS

We need omega 3s for a healthy brain. These fatty acids protect the nerves and help build proper neural connections.
Several studies have linked low intake of omega 3s to increased risk of age-related cognitive decline. Fatty fish is the most common source of omega 3s. But you can also get them from plant foods like flaxseeds, chia seeds, seaweed and mustard oil.

4. CALCIUM

We all know that calcium helps keep our teeth and bones strong. But did you know that calcium is vital for a healthy brain?
Calcium helps transfer signals that come to the brain into the inside of the cells. Therefore, low calcium intake can lower brain function.
It’s worth noting that high protein and sodium intake can make the body excrete calcium.

5. ZINC

According to research, increasing zinc intake can improve your memory and help control the occurrence of epileptic seizures.
Food sources of zinc include liver, beef, seeds and nuts. Make sure you reach the daily recommended intake of 15 milligrams.

6. MAGNESIUM

One animal study found that magnesium supplementation can reverse brain aging and improve long-term memory.
Magnesium has also been shown to ease depression and anxiety. Almonds, spinach, pumpkin seeds, cashews and Brazil nuts are some of the best sources of magnesium.

5 plants you should buy for your home to fight colds and help cure insomnia

If you have trouble sleeping or get sick often, buy these plants for every room in your house. Certain indoor plants have been proven to help absorb harmful toxins in the air, such as formaldehyde, benzene, trichloroethylene and carbon monoxide.
These toxins are found in everyday items from plastic wallpaper, carpeting, insulation, cleaning supplies and air fresheners.
These plants can reduce many air pollutants including formaldehyde, microbial pathogens, benzene and microbial pathogens.

By removing these chemicals, this makes it easier to breathe and sleep at night.

5 plants you should buy for your home to fight colds and help cure insomnia

Bamboo Palm (Chamaedorea seifrizii)
According to NASA, it removes formaldahyde and is also said to act as a natural humidifier. All you need is to place one or two of these in a room to remove the toxins.

Rubber Plant (Ficus robusta)
Provides moisture, eliminates bio effluents, removes volatile organic compounds as well as suppresses air based microorganisms as soon as it’s put into a room! As time passes, the rubber plant becomes even more efficient at eliminating toxic compounds present in the air.

Dracaena (Dracaena dermensis)
This is one of the best houseplants tested for removing trichloroethylene.
These plants absorb 90 percent of the acetone from household cleaners and nail polish remover.

Dwarf Date Palm (Phoenix roebelenii)
It is able to remove formaldehyde and xylene (a chemical found in plastics and solvents) from the air.

Corn Plant (Dracaena fragrans)
This is a excellent plant that purifies the air by getting rid of toxins and adding oxygen to the air we breathe
The pollutants it soaks up are formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylene.

14-Foot Wall Built Out Of 12,000 Colorful Pencils

The 14′ x 6′ mosaic consists of 12,000 colored pencils, arranged in patterns that appear to be reaching out towards the viewer. To create the piece, the designers sectioned the installation off into parts, and meticulously organized the colors based off of a detailed plan. The pixelated rainbow uses 25 unique colors, arranged by plugging the tips into a 1x1 grid, which evolve from black on the edges to white near the center of the piece.
