Reverse 28 health conditions when you cut out these foods

You might be aware that organic food is better for you than GMO options, but sometimes the price difference can be prohibitive. If you’ve ever stood in the produce section of the supermarket and asked yourself if the higher price tag on organic offerings is worth it, the results of a peer-reviewed study published recently in the International Journal of Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine will probably help make that decision a lot easier.

The survey of 3,256 people found that 28 conditions could be reversed by switching to a mostly non-GMO and organic diet. This research is consistent with physician reports that show the power of making this type of dietary improvement.

The respondents were asked, among other questions, what conditions or symptoms they have seen improve since making the switch to a GMO-free diet. For each of the 28 symptoms listed, they chose between “some mild improvement,” “moderate improvement,” “significant improvement,” “nearly gone,” “complete recovery” and “not applicable,” which was the default.
Some of the most common conditions to note improvements from making the switch to non-GMO were digestive problems like fatigue and leaky gut, along with obesity.
In total, 85.2 percent of respondents with digestive problems noted they were severely reduced or reversed by switching to non-GMO food. More than 60 percent with fatigue and low energy reported improvements, while 54.6 percent said it turned around weight problems such as being obese or overweight. This is not surprising when you consider that a GMO diet has been linked to excessive cell growth in the lining of the stomach and intestines along with other physiological issues.

More than half of people said a non-GMO diet eliminated that feeling of “brain fog” that is familiar to many people, while a similar amount noted that the change helped them avoid food allergies and sensitivities.
Mood problems also benefited from the switch, with 51.1 percent saying it helped with anxiety and depression, and 48.1 percent noting improvements in memory and concentration.
Meanwhile, 47.5 percent of people said their joint pain improved, and 46.6 percent said a non-GMO diet meant the end of their seasonal allergies.

How do GMO foods cause illness?

The research cited in the study points to three major ways GMO foods like corn, soy, alfalfa, and papaya can cause illness. First of all, the GMO transformation process is known to cause some side effects. The Bt toxin in cotton and corn plants is also considered dangerous, while the herbicides that are sprayed on most GMOs are full of side effects. One of the most popular herbicide ingredients, glyphosate, has been called a probable carcinogen by the World Health Organization and is at the center of class action lawsuits filed on behalf of cancer patients.
There are a few limitations to this survey, as the authors freely admit. The respondents do not represent the population at large as they are people who were on a mailing list of the Institute for Responsible Technology, an advocacy group that teaches people about GMO health dangers. Nevertheless, the wide range of improvements seen is very promising.
The next time you’re making grocery decisions, keep these results in mind. Why not try going all organic for a while and see which of your symptoms improve?

Reverse 28 health conditions when you cut out these foods

Former Victoria Secret model Lindsay Ellingson starts every morning with a glass of warm water. She learned that the body supposedly has an easier time absorbing warm water and it helps soothe the stomach. On the other-hand there are several studies that show that cold water is better, especially in the morning, for boosting our metabolism and inducing weight loss. Are there any health benefits of cold showers?

The theory is that our body must work harder to bring the cold water up to our internal temperature of 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Further, several studies show that we benefit more from cold showers than warm. Let’s look at the research that has been done to help us determine if we should be drinking and showering with cold or hot water?

In 2003, a German research team studied 14 people and determined that if the participants drank ice cold water, their caloric burn increased by 30% for about an hour. Dr. Rachelle Pojednic, assistant professor in the nutrition department of Simmons college and professor at the Harvard Extension School, says that “If you chug your way through 2 liters of ice cold water (that is a large soda bottle) you could burn and extra 100 calories per day… that’s a lot of freezing cold water to drink”. Unfortunately, according to Dr. Pojednic, the study was later determined to have been flawed by the way the researchers calculated calorie burn.
More scientifically sound research (according to the US National Library of Medicine) indicates the thermogenic effect of cold water is only about 4 to 7 calories per glass. “It’s pretty minimal”, said Leslle Bonci, a nutritionist and owner of Active Eating Advice. “… even of you have 8 glasses of cold water, that is only about 64 calories. That is not even a pretzel”. It should also be said that there is no sound scientific research that indicates warm water being better absorbed. All researchers agree, that drinking water at any temperature is beneficial. Dehydration causes fatigue and your body to shut down metabolism (not ideal for weight loss). Hydration on the other hand will make you feel fuller (eat less), lubricate muscles and joints, and maintain blood pressure (which delivers nutrients and oxygen to your body).

Health Benefits of Cold Showers

Cold showers on the other hand do have several benefits we should be aware of. These benefits have been known for a long time. Katherine Hepburn was a fan of cold showers and would regularly take ice cold baths and showers to increase energy and alertness. In addition to the cold water shock, the increased breathing we do when cold increases our oxygen levels in our blood, giving us a long lasting energy boost.

Further cold showers will help reduce the loss of our skins natural oils too quickly. It will also make your hair appear shinier and stronger by flattening hair follicles and increasing their ability to grip the scalp. In addition, the increased blood flow around our organs (as a way to heat our body up) has cardiovascular benefits including lowering blood pressure, clearing blocked arteries and improving immunity. Lastly, a 1994 study found that cold waters decreased uric acid levels and increased dramatically the amount of electrical impulses from nerve endings to the brain, thus having an impact on stress and depression levels.
As you can see, water is essential to life. Drinking water at any temperature is essential for good health. While cold water does seem cause extra caloric burn, the amount is negligible. If cold water helps you drink more, drink cold water. If warm water helps you enjoy water more and drink more, drink warm water. However, the benefits of cold showers are profound, and you should include cold showers in your life. Maybe not every shower you take is cold, but try to throw a few cold showers into your weekly schedule… your hair, skin and stress level will thank you.

13 Health Benefits of Coffee, Based on Science

Coffee is actually very healthy.
It is loaded with antioxidants and beneficial nutrients that can improve your health.
The studies show that coffee drinkers have a much lower risk of several serious diseases.
Here are the top 13 health benefits of coffee, that have been confirmed in actual human studies.
1. Coffee Can Improve Energy Levels and Make You Smarter
Coffee can help people feel less tired and increase energy levels (12).
This is because it contains a stimulant called caffeine, which is actually the most commonly consumed psychoactive substance in the world (3).
After you drink coffee, the caffeine is absorbed into the bloodstream. From there, it travels into the brain (4).
In the brain, caffeine blocks an inhibitory neurotransmitter called Adenosine.
When that happens, the amount of other neurotransmitters like norepinephrine and dopamine actually increases, leading to enhanced firing of neurons (56).
Many controlled trials in humans show that coffee improves various aspects of brain function. This includes memory, mood, vigilance, energy levels, reaction times and general cognitive function (789).
BOTTOM LINE: Caffeine blocks an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, which leads to a stimulant effect. This improves energy levels, mood and various aspects of brain function.
2. Coffee Can Help You Burn Fat
Did you know that caffeine is found in almost every commercial fat burning supplement?
There's a good reason for that... caffeine is one of the very few natural substances that have actually been proven to aid fat burning.
Several studies show that caffeine can boost the metabolic rate by 3-11% (1011).
Other studies show that caffeine can specifically increase the burning of fat, by as much as 10% in obese individuals and 29% in lean people (12).
However, it is possible that these effects will diminish in long-term coffee drinkers.
BOTTOM LINE: Several studies show that caffeine can increase fat burning in the body and boost the metabolic rate.
3. The Caffeine Can Drastically Improve Physical Performance
Caffeine stimulates the nervous system, causing it to send signals to the fat cells to break down body fat (1314).
But caffeine also increases Epinephrine (Adrenaline) levels in the blood (1516).
This is the "fight or flight" hormone, designed to make our bodies ready for intense physical exertion.
Caffeine makes the fat cells break down body fat, releasing them into the blood as free fatty acids and making them available as fuel (1718).
Given these effects, it is not surprising to see that caffeine can improve physical performance by 11-12%, on average (2029).
Because of this, it makes sense to have a strong cup of coffee about a half an hour before you head to the gym.
BOTTOM LINE: Caffeine can increase adrenaline levels and release fatty acids from the fat tissues. It also leads to significant improvements in physical performance.
4. There Are Essential Nutrients in Coffee
Coffee is more than just black water. Many of the nutrients in the coffee beans do make it into the final drink.
A single cup of coffee contains (21):
  • Riboflavin (Vitamin B2): 11% of the RDA.
  • Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5): 6% of the RDA.
  • Manganese and Potassium: 3% of the RDA.
  • Magnesium and Niacin (B3): 2% of the RDA.
Although this may not seem like a big deal, most people are drinking more than one cup per day. If you drink 3-4, then these amounts quickly add up.
BOTTOM LINE: Coffee contains several important nutrients, including Riboflavin, Pantothenic Acid, Manganese, Potassium, Magnesium and Niacin.
5. Coffee May Lower Your Risk of Type II Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is a gigantic health problem, currently afflicting about 300 million people worldwide.
It is characterized by elevated blood sugars in the context of insulin resistance or an inability to secrete insulin.
For some reason, coffee drinkers have a significantly reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
The studies show that people who drink the most coffee have a 23-50% lower risk of getting this disease, one study showing a reduction as high as 67% (2223242526).
According to a massive review that looked at data from 18 studies with a total of 457,922 individuals, each daily cup of coffee was associated with a 7% reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes (27).
BOTTOM LINE: Several observational studies show that coffee drinkers have a much lower risk of getting type II diabetes, a serious disease that currently afflicts about 300 million people worldwide.
6. Coffee May Protect You From Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia
Alzheimer's disease is the most common neurodegenerative disease and the leading cause of dementia worldwide.
This disease usually affects people over 65 years of age.
Unfortunately, there is no known cure for Alzheimer's.
However, there are several things you can do to prevent the disease from showing up in the first place.
This includes the usual suspects like eating healthy and exercising, but drinking coffee may be incredibly effective as well.
Several studies show that coffee drinkers have up to a 65% lower risk of getting Alzheimer's disease (2829).
BOTTOM LINE: Coffee drinkers have a much lower risk of getting Alzheimer's disease, which is a leading cause of dementia worldwide.
7. Caffeine May Lower The Risk of Parkinson's
Parkinson's disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease, right after Alzheimer's.
It is caused by death of dopamine-generating neurons in the brain.
Same as with Alzheimer's, there is no known cure, which makes it that much more important to focus on prevention.
In studies, coffee drinkers have a much lower risk of developing Parkinson's disease, with a reduction in risk ranging from 32-60% (30313233).
In this case, it appears to be the caffeine itself that is causing the effect. People who drink decaf don't have a lower risk of Parkinson's (34).
BOTTOM LINE: Coffee drinkers have up to a 60% lower risk of getting Parkinson's disease, the second most common neurodegenerative disorder.
8. Coffee Appears to Have Protective Effects on The Liver
The liver is an amazing organ that carries out hundreds of important functions in the body.
Several common diseases primarily affect the liver, including hepatitis, fatty liver disease and others.
Many of these diseases can lead to a condition called cirrhosis, in which the liver has been largely replaced by scar tissue.
It turns out that coffee may protect against cirrhosis. People who drink 4 or more cups per day have up to an 80% lower risk (353637).
BOTTOM LINE: Coffee drinkers have a much lower risk of developing cirrhosis, which can be caused by several diseases that affect the liver.
9. Coffee Can Fight Depression and Make You Happier
Depression is a serious mental disorder that causes a significantly reduced quality of life.
It is incredibly common and about 4.1% of people in the U.S. currently meet the criteria for clinical depression.
In a Harvard study published in 2011, women who drank 4 or more cups per day had a 20% lower risk of becoming depressed (38).
Another study with 208,424 individuals found that those who drank 4 or more cups per day were 53% less likely to commit suicide (39).
BOTTOM LINE: Coffee appears to lower the risk of developing depression and may dramatically reduce the risk of suicide.
10. Coffee Drinkers Have a Lower Risk of Some Types of Cancer
Cancer is one of the world's leading causes of death and is characterized by uncontrolled growth of cells in the body.
Coffee appears to be protective against two types of cancer... liver cancer and colorectal cancer.
Liver cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in the world, while colorectal cancer ranks fourth (40).
Studies show that coffee drinkers have up to a 40% lower risk of liver cancer (4142).
One study of 489,706 individuals found that those who drank 4-5 cups of coffee per day had a 15% lower risk of colorectal cancer (43).
BOTTOM LINE: Liver and colorectal cancer are the 3rd and 4th leading causes of cancer death worldwide. Coffee drinkers have a lower risk of both.
11. Coffee Does Not Cause Heart Disease and May Lower The Risk of Stroke
It is often claimed that caffeine can increase blood pressure.
This is true, but the effect is small (3-4 mm/Hg) and usually goes away if you drink coffee regularly (4445).
However, the effect may persist in some people, so keep that in mind if you have elevated blood pressure (4647).
That being said, the studies do NOT support the myth that coffee raises the risk of heart disease (4849).
In fact, there is some evidence that women who drink coffee have a reduced risk of heart disease (50).
Some studies also show that coffee drinkers have a 20% lower risk of stroke (5152).
BOTTOM LINE: Coffee may cause mild increases in blood pressure, which usually diminish over time. Coffee drinkers do not have an increased risk of heart disease, but a slightly lower risk of stroke.
12. Coffee May Help You Live Longer
Given that coffee drinkers are less likely to get many diseases, it makes sense that coffee could help you live longer.
There are actually several observational studies showing that coffee drinkers have a lower risk of death.
In two very large studies, drinking coffee was associated with a 20% lower risk of death in men and a 26% lower risk of death in women, over a period of 18-24 years (53).
This effect appears to be particularly strong in type II diabetics. In one study, diabetics who drank coffee had a 30% lower risk of death during a 20 year study period (54).
BOTTOM LINE: Several studies show that coffee drinkers live longer and have a lower risk of premature death.
13. Coffee is The Biggest Source of Antioxidants in The Western Diet
For people who eat a standard Western diet, coffee may actually be the healthiest aspect of the diet.
That's because coffee contains a massive amount of antioxidants.
In fact, studies show that most people get more antioxidants from coffee than both fruits and vegetables... combined (555657).
Coffee is one of the healthiest beverages on the planet. Period.

Irish study shows ’substantial’ health benefits from eggs and chicken enriched with Omega 3

Enriching eggs and chicken with omega-3 nutrients could potentially have "substantial" health benefits, an Irish academic has said.
Professor Alice Stanton of The Royal College of Surgeons revealed results from a small six-month clinical trial.
Chicken meat and eggs used in the study came from birds offered a sustainable and algae-based source of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA).
Professor Stanton said greater consumption of oily fish has long been linked to a reduced incidence of heart attack, stroke, diabetes and cancer and improved brain health, vision, muscle and joint health.

She added: "International guidelines recommend eating oily fish at least once per week, however, many people do not eat fish at all and less than 20% of the world’s population have optimal omega-3 PUFA levels.
"Therefore, in this project we studied the recently developed alternatives to oily fish or supplementation, namely chicken meat and eggs, naturally enriched with sustainable algae-based omega-3 PUFA.
"Omega-3 enriched chicken and eggs offer consumers an attractive alternative to eating oily fish or to the lifelong taking of supplements, with the potential for substantial health benefits,"
The clinical trial was delivered on behalf of Belfast-headquartered farming and food company Devenish.
161 participants on the clinical trial ate at least 3 portions of omega-3 chicken, omega-3 eggs, a combination of both or a control chicken diet each week, for 6 months, in a randomised double blind controlled study @AHAMeetings @RCSI_Irl @ucddublin
The 161 subjects consumed at least three portions of chicken and eggs per week which had been naturally enriched with omega-3.
Professor Chris Elliott, founder of the Institute for Global Food Security & pro vice chancellor, Faculty of Medicine, Health & Life Sciences, Queens University Belfast, said the cost to the health service of treating cardiovascular related illness in the UK is £10 billion a year.
"Having access to sustainably-produced nutrient-rich food, with a scientifically proven health claim, offers huge potential to turn this around globally."
Dr Heather Hayes, director of food innovation with Devenish, said offering birds a natural and sustainable source of omega-3 PUFA was good for the bird and good for the consumer.

"Taste panel studies have shown that the omega-3 enriched chicken meat tastes as good, if not better than conventional chicken."

Elsie Eiler, The Lone Resident Of Monowi Town In Nebraska

Elsie Eiler, 77, is the only inhabitant of Monowi, a village in northeast Nebraska, several news sites reported on Wednesday.

Reports said that according to a new 2010 Census data, Monowi is the only incorporated town, village or city in United States with only one resident.

According to reports, Monowi had two people in 2000, Elsie and her husband Rudy. However, Rudy died in 2004.

“We probably have the record by going down in population 50 percent,” Eiler was quoted saying. “I chose to stay here after my husband died. It’s home.”

Eiler owns and operates the only business in town, the Monowi Tavern. Her bar has a sign that reads “coldest beer in town” which is true because it is the only beer in town. She reportedly opens the bar at 9am and closes at 10pm.

Reports said that she also runs the town library, which contains about 5,000 books.

At its peak in 1930, it was reported that the Monowi town had a population of 150. However, the population declined after the railroad left it.
