'3 Billboards In Florida' Troll Marco Rubio Over School Shooting

Borrowing a scene from an Oscar-nominated film, three red billboard-sized messages have appeared in the streets of Miami and beyond to flame Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) for his inaction on gun control in the wake of the tragic school shooting in Parkland.
Together the signs, which are displayed on the sides of three trucks, read: “Slaughtered in school ... and still no gun control? How come, Marco Rubio?”
The signs echo a key plot element in the movie “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” The billboards in the film, rented by a mother played by Frances McDormand, pose the same kind of question to the local sheriff concerning the unsolved murder of her daughter.
The Rubio signs, which have moved around Miami and outside the senator’s office in nearby Doral, were arranged by online activist group Avaaz.
Rubio has received $3.3 million in campaign contributions from the National Rifle Association. The gun rights group has given Rubio an A+ for his NRA- friendly legislative positions.
“The senator has taken fire across the country for his toothless response to the shooting, calling it ‘inexplicable.’ We call that inexcusable,” said Avaaz deputy director Emma Ruby-Sachs in a statement.
Rubio has insisted that stricter gun laws — such as banning the sale of the assault-style rifle used in the tragedy — would have done nothing to prevent the deaths of 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. “That is a fact,” he told WPBF-TV. He also said that schools are “complicated.”
Shortly after Wednesday’s shooting, the senator told Fox News that lawmakers should “reserve judgment” and not “jump to conclusions that there’s some lawthat we could have passed that could have prevented it.”
Rubio’s office had yet to respond to media inquiries about the signs at the time this story was posted.

Third-graders are selling AR-15 raffle tickets in Missouri

Third-graders in a Missouri community are continuing to sell raffle tickets for an AR-15 to benefit their traveling baseball team after the same type of rifle was used to slaughter and injure dozens at a Florida school.
Levi Patterson, the coach of a 9-and-under baseball team in Neosho, Mo., told The Star the idea was conceived before the shooting in Parkland, Fla.
A father of one of the players — who co-founded Black Rain Ordnance Inc., a weapons purveyor in Neosho — offered the weapon for the raffle.
Patterson said by phone Saturday that he considered finding a different raffle item after Wednesday’s mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, but ultimately decided to “turn it into a positive thing” after “getting the hate.”
“One of the people from the hate group turned in (a Facebook post about the raffle) for I don’t know what,” Patterson said. The post had shown a weapon next to the school logo, leading to fierce criticism by some until Facebook removed the post, according to Patterson.
After this story was published, Patterson said he mistakenly said the critics were part of a hate group. He said he does not view them as a hate group but as a concerned group that has “every right to stand up for what they believe in.”
“I applaud them for standing up for what they believe in. I just think they have feelings to this specific type of gun (that are) different than people around here do,” he said.
Patterson said donations have poured in as the criticism reached a peak following the Florida shooting; people from as far away as Colorado offered to buy tickets on Facebook.
The perpetrator in Florida killed 17 people and injured at least 14 with an AR-15 in six minutes
“Are you all tone deaf?” wrote Dan Weaver in a comment on Patterson’s page. “AR15 kills seventeen so you raffle a gun for child sports? Lord, people wake the hell up. Justify all you want but you are wrong, period.”
Patterson responded by writing that “gun raffles have been going on for years. Evil has and will always exist. Our hearts break for those involved, and we do not take that lightly.”
He also told The Star that he was not making a political statement with the raffle item. It was simply what had been offered by Black Rain.
He said critics view the weapon as a “killing machine.”
On Wednesday, Patterson took to Facebook to fire back at the “concerned group” critical of the raffle.
“We appreciate your ‘concern’ but please understand, we are not, have not, and will not force one of our boys to sell raffle tickets for the Black Rain AR15 Spec 15, if they are uncomfortable doing so,” he wrote.
He told The Star that all the players, who range in age from 7 to 9, are selling the raffle tickets.
The raffle is not affiliated with the Neosho School District.
The winner must pass a background check before receiving the gun.
Lee Woodward, the principal of South Elementary School in Neosho, announced the raffle on her Facebook page and encouraged purchases to support the “9u Neosho baseball players, coaches, and parents.” The post was made hours after the Florida shooting.
Woodward did not return a call or text to a phone number listed in her name.
Tyler Tannahill, a Republican congressional candidate from Kansas, also drew criticism this past week for offering an AR-15 giveaway as part of his campaign.

Cleaning products as bad for lungs as smoking 20 cigarettes a day, scientists warn

Regular use of cleaning sprays has an impact on lung health comparable with smoking a pack of cigarettes every day, according to a new study.
The research followed more than 6,000 people over a 20 year period and found women in particular suffered significant health problems after long-term use of these products.
Lung function decline in women working as cleaners or regularly using cleaning products at home was comparable to smoking 20 cigarettes a day over 10 to 20 years.
The scientists who carried out the study advised that such products should be avoided and can normally be replaced with simple microfibre cloths and water."While the short-term effects of cleaning chemicals on asthma are becoming increasingly well documented, we lack knowledge of the long-term impact," said Professor Cecile Svanes, a medic at the University of Bergen and the senior author of the study.
"We feared that such chemicals, by steadily causing a little damage to the airways day after day, year after year, might accelerate the rate of lung function decline that occurs with age."
Lung function was measured by testing how much air the participants could forcibly breathe out.
This was then compared to the answers from a questionnaire given to everyone in the study to gauge their level of cleaning activities.
The scientists found that the amount of air breathed out by their participants decreased more in women who regularly cleaned.
The study did not find any harmful effects comparable to those seen in women in the men they studied.
However, the scientists noted their work did have some limitations, and the number of men exposed to cleaning products on the scale of women in the study was small.
While the results appear dramatic, the researchers speculated chemicals in cleaning products irritate the fragile mucous membranes lining the lungs, which over time leads to lasting damage and “remodelling” of the airways.
"When you think of inhaling small particles from cleaning agents that are meant for cleaning the floor and not your lungs, maybe it is not so surprising after all," said Øistein Svanes , a doctoral student who led the study.
"The take home message of this study is that in the long run cleaning chemicals very likely cause rather substantial damage to your lungs," she added.
"These chemicals are usually unnecessary; microfibre cloths and water are more than enough for most purposes."

Rosenstein: Russians paid, recruited Americans

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announced the indictments of Russian nationals in US election meddling Friday afternoon, and answered a few questions.
The Department of Justice announced Friday that it is filing charges against 13 Russian nationals and three Russian groups for interfering with the 2016 US elections.
Below are Rosenstein’s remarks in full.
The indictment charges 13 Russian nationals and three Russian companies for committing federal crimes while seeking to interfere in the United States political system, including the 2016 presidential election.
The defendants allegedly conducted what they called information warfare against the United States, with the stated goal of spreading distrust towards the candidates and the political system in general.
According to the allegations in the indictment, 12 of the individual defendants worked at various times for a company called Internet Research Agency LLC, a Russian company based in St. Petersburg.
The other individual department, Evgeny Victorovich Posogon, funded the conspiracy through companies known as Concord Management and Consultants LLC, Concord Catering, and many affiliates and subsidiaries. The conspiracy was part of a larger operation called project Lacta.
Project Lacta included multiple components, some involving domestic audiences within the Russian Federation, and others targeting foreign audiences in multiple countries. Internet Research Agency allegedly operated through Russian shell companies. It employed hundreds of people in its online operations, ranging from creators of fictitious personas to technical and administrative support personnel, with an annual budget of millions of dollars.
Internet Research Agency was a structured organization headed by a management group and arranged into departments including graphics, search engine optimization, information technology and finance departments.
In 2014, the company established a translator project focused on the United States. In July 2016, more than 80 employees were assigned to the translator project. Two of the defendants allegedly traveled to the United States in 2014 to collect intelligence for their American influence operations. In order to hide the Russian origins of their activities, the departments allegedly purchased space on computer servers located here in the United States in order to set up a virtual private network.
The defendants allegedly used that infrastructure to establish hundreds of accounts on social media networks such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, making it appear that those accounts were controlled by persons located in the United States.
They used stolen or fictitious American identities, fraudulent bank accounts, and false identification documents. The defendants posed as politically and socially active Americans advocating for and against particular candidates. They established social media pages and groups to communicate with unwitting Americans. They also purchased political advertisements on social media networks. The Russians also recruited and paid real Americans to engage in political activities for political campaigns and stage political rallies.
The defendants and their co-conspirators pretended to be grassroots activists. According to the indictment, the Americans did not know they were communicating with Russians.
After the election, the defendants allegedly staged rallies to support the president-elect, while simultaneously staging rallies to protest his election. For example, the defendants organized one rally to support the president-elect and another rally to oppose him, both in New York on the same day.
On September 13 of 2017, soon after the news media reported that the special counsel’s office was investigating evidence that Russian operatives had used social media to interfere with the 2016 election, one defendant allegedly wrote, “We had a slight crisis here at work. The FBI busted our activity. So I got preoccupied with covering tracks together with my colleagues.”
The indictment includes eight criminal counts. Count one alleges a criminal conspiracy to defraud the United States, by all of the defendants. The defendants allegedly conspired to defraud America by impairing the lawful functions of the Federal Election Commission, the United States Department of Justice, and the Department of State.
Those organizations of the US government are responsible for administrating federal requirements for disclosure of foreign involvement in certain domestic activities.
Count two charges conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud by Internet Research Agency and two of the individual defendants.
Counts three through eight charge aggravated identity theft by internet research agency and four individuals. Now, there is no allegation in this indictment that any American was a knowing participant in this illegal activity. There is no allegation in the indictment that the charge conduct altered the outcome of the 2016 election.
I want to caution you that everyone charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court. At trial, prosecutors must introduce credible evidence that is sufficient to prove each defendant guilty beyond any reasonable doubt to a unanimous jury. Special counsel’s investigation is ongoing. There will be no comments from the special counsel at this time. This indictment serves as a reminder that people are not always who they appear to be on the internet. The indictment alleges that the Russian conspirators want to promote discord in the United States and undermine public confidence and democracy. We must not allow them to succeed.
The Department of Justice will continue to work cooperatively with other intelligence agencies and with the Congress to defend our nation against similar current and future efforts. I want to thank the federal agents and prosecutors who are working on this case for their exceptional service and I’ll be happy to take a few questions.
Is there concern that this influenced the outcome of the election?
What I have identified for you are the allegations in the indictment. There are no allegations in the indictment of any effect on the outcome of the election.
On page four of the indictment, paragraph six, it specifically talks about the Trump campaign, saying that defendants communicated with unwitting individuals associated with the Trump campaign. My question is later in the indictment, campaign officials are referenced not by their name, by campaign official one or two or three. Were campaign officials cooperative, or were they duped? What was their relationship with this?
There’s no allegation in this indictment that any American had any knowledge, and the nature of the scheme was the kept defendants took extraordinary steps to make it appear they were ordinary American political activists, even going so far as to base their activities on a virtual private network here in the United States, so if anybody traced it back to the first jump, they appeared to be American.
