How To Use Olive Oil for Hair Growth

Who doesn’t envy of having long and lustrous hair. Long ago, hair loss was just considered a sign of ageing. But due to urban lifestyle, hectic schedules, food habits, hormonal changes and other environmental factors, our hair undergoes a tuff wear and tear daily. This leads to weak and lifeless hair at a much younger age.
Dry, frizzy, split ends, breakage and reduced hair growth are the common hair problems almost everyone is facing in their lives. Being habitual to instant solutions, we often choose chemical based solutions to fix the problem. But instead of healing the problem, they actually cause damage to your scalp and hair health. Fixing hair problems is never instant because the origin the problem is different.

Natural topical applications like olive oil, coconut oil, tea tree oil and other ingredients are effective in controlling the hair loss to 50 – 60% percent. But if you are looking out for 100% solution then eat nutrient rich foods and improve your overall health.
Does Olive Oil Really Stimulate Hair Growth and Prevent Hair Breakage? Let’s have a look at the scientific facts behind it.

How Does Olive Oil Help Your Hair Grow?

1. Lowers DHT Production

Increase in DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is one of the main culprit behind hair loss. It is a hormone that directly attacks and weakens the hair follicles leading to hair fall. The levels of DTH increase when you are over stressed, imbalance in sugar levels and hormonal imbalance. Regular consumption of olive oil restricts the production of DTH which in turn prevent hair fall.

2. Prevents Damage to the Hair

Olive oil is a warehouse of antioxidants which fight with free radicals and prevent them from causing any harm. They support scalp health and reduce the damage caused by harsh chemicals in hair products.

3. Nourishes and Conditions Hair

Massing the scalp with olive oil encourages blood circulation which strengthen hair follicles. The nutrients and unsaturated fats present in it nourish the hair and scalp. It helps to seal the moisture in hair shaft, prevents dryness, reduces frizz and makes hair more manageable. Its conditioning properties also prevent hair from breakage.

4. Holds Anti-microbial Properties

Olive oil contains antimicrobial properties which fight with fungus or bacteria causing scalp infections like itching, dandruff, and clogged follicles that are some of the leading causes of hair loss.

5. Omega fatty acids

Olive oil contains both omega 6 & 9 fatty acids. Omega 6 fatty acids prevent the hair from losing moisture in dry environments. Omega 9 fatty acids make the hair more bendable and pliable. As our body cannot produce omega fatty acids on its own, olive oil can be a great supplement to get them.
  • It has essential nutrients along with mono-unsaturated fatty acids that reduce the hair loss by strengthening the hair from roots to tip. It also thickens the hair strands.
  • Massaging with olive oil on the scalp will help to improve the blood circulation which stimulates the follicles to produce thicker hair strands.

How to Use Olive for Hair Growth?

Olive oil alone is effective in preventing or slowing down the hair fall. It can be either topically applied, used in dishes or gulped up straight. However, adding natural ingredients like almond oil, rosemary, cayenne pepper, castor oil to olive oil enhances its effectiveness.

6 Foods That Could Increase Your Dementia Risk (and What to Eat Instead)

You’ve been hearing for years about how eating a healthier diet can help prolong your life — but there’s more. Recent studies have shown certain foods can actually contribute to brain health while others have been linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
The fact is Alzheimer’s and dementia were not nearly as prevalent 50 years ago as they are today, and the modern American diet could be largely to blame. But you can fight back against this trend. By making some changes to your diet, you can keep your brain happy — and healthy — for a long time.
Changing your diet can help to positively impact your brain health in the future and might even help to reverse some of the damage that’s already been done. A study published by the journal of Alzheimer’s & Dementia found that of 900 participants polled, those who followed recommended dietary recommendations and avoided known trigger foods had a level of cognitive function 7½ years younger than their biological age.
Here are six foods to avoid, plus six things you can do to promote brain health.

1. Sugar

Neuropathologist Suzanne DeLaMonte is credited with coining the term “Type 3 diabetes” when referencing Alzheimer’s disease. According to her research, sugar consumption results in insulin resistance. And regularly consuming insulin-spiking foods can eventually cause brain degeneration and dementia.

2. Processed cheese

Yes, it’s time to put down the Cheez Whiz and back away. Any processed cheese product, including string cheese and pre-wrapped sandwich slices, contains proteins that slowly build up in the body, which have been linked to Alzheimer’s.
Cheese lover? Try swapping your sandwich slices for a handful of almonds, as nuts are shown to be one of the key foods for optimal brain health. As a bonus for women, eating lots of nuts and extra virgin olive oil has also been shown to reduce your risk of breast cancer.

3. Processed meat

Lunch meat, sausage, ham, and even your beloved bacon are all problematic. These smoked meats contain carcinogenic chemical compounds called nitrosamines, which help to increase shelf life. They are linked to certain cancers and have also been found to increase brain degeneration in Alzheimer’s patients.
When lunchtime rolls around, consider a vegetarian entrée with a bean base or some healthy fish, such as salmon. Add some fresh veggies to make your meal a real power-packed brain-booster.

4. Beer

Even your beloved craft brew can have a scary side effect. Like processed meat, nitrosamines, or nitrates, can be used to process beer. And what’s worse is manufacturers are not required to disclose this process on the label.
Just because beer isn’t recommended for optimal brain health, it doesn’t mean you have to be a complete teetotaler. In fact, the brain-boosting MIND diet recommends you consume one glass of red wine per day.

5. White foods

This category includes items such as white bread, white rice, pasta, and any other insulin-spiking foods. Blood sugar spikes cause inflammation in your body, which is one of the suspected causes of Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Instead of a sandwich, put together a healthy salad for lunch with lots of leafy greens and chopped veggies. Top it off with some fresh berries for natural sweetness, and add a protein, such as beans or even fish.

6. Carbohydrates

Even “healthy” whole-grain bread can cause dramatic blood sugar spikes, making it just as dangerous as white bread, bagels, and doughnuts. When you’re trying to feed your brain and prevent dementia and Alzheimer’s, it’s best to dramatically decrease the amount of carbs you’re consuming.
For a filling and brain-healthy meal, try beans. Bean-based entrees are an essential part of the MIND diet, which was created specifically for promoting brain health.

Those were six types of food to avoid if you want a healthy brain. Now, here are six things you can do to keep your mind happy and healthy.

1. Feed your brain

Researchers have studied the effects of nutrition on brain health for years now and have started to see some distinct patterns emerging. In general, these brain studies have uncovered that diets including foods, such as berries, leafy greens, and certain types of fish, are more likely to reduce your odds of developing brain-degenerative diseases, such as dementia and Alzheimer’s.

2. Try the MIND diet

When planning your weekly meals, do your best to adhere to the MIND diet, a way of eating specifically targeted toward optimizing brain health. MIND stands for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay. It takes cues from the related DASH diet and the classic Mediterranean diet.
The MIND diet emphasizes leafy greens, such as spinach, generous helpings of vegetables, nuts, berries, beans, fish, poultry, olive oil, and even wine. It minimizes the incorporation of red meat, butter, sweets, and fast food or fried food.

3. Eat your veggies

When you’re following the MIND diet, every day should include plenty of veggies, which you can enjoy raw, steamed, baked, roasted, in salads, or any way you like. The diet is more like a set of guidelines, offering tons of flexibility for you to cater to your specific preferences. If you hate spinach but you’re happy to graze the day away on Romaine lettuce, that’s completely fine.

4. Make your own meal plans

One study found people who followed the MIND diet closely minimized their risk of developing Alzheimer’s by 54%, but those who only followed it moderately saw little to no change in their risk profile.
The beauty of the MIND diet is it’s not overly specific. There is no calorie counting or required meal breakdowns. Rather the recommendations break down specific servings per week of each item, so you can choose to incorporate those foods in whichever combination makes sense for you.

5. Lose weight

Here’s an added bonus: Following the MIND diet might even help you lose weight, especially if you were eating lots of processed or fast food before starting it. Be very cognizant of your portions, however, because a lot of MIND-friendly foods are high in fat and calories. The good news is many recommended items, such as nuts and beans, are naturally filling, so you’ll be inclined to eat less.

6. Preventing dementia

A little prevention can go a long way to reducing your risk for early-onset dementia. Even if you’ve eaten the foods on this list for most of your life, cutting down consumption can help reduce your risk considerably and can undo some of the damage that’s been done — just like it can when you quit smoking.
Even if you’ve been eating fast food on a regular basis for a while, adopting a brain-healthy MIND diet today can help to save your brain for years to come.

8 Natural Mosquito Repellents

Before you grab that DEET-based mosquito repellent, consider using a natural option instead. DEET, also known as diethyl-meta-toluamide, by any other name still stinks. And research proves that the main ingredient in commercial mosquito repellents leaves more than a bad odor. According to a Duke University study, it damages brain cells, can cause behavioral changes and can have harmful interactions with some medications.  The scientists also observed that it caused brain cell death in animals frequently exposed to or after prolonged use of DEET.
Additional research found that up to 15 percent of DEET is absorbed through the skin directly into the bloodstream. According to safety data sheets on diethyl-meta-toluaminde, the toxic effects of this chemical include: reproductive disturbances, genetic material mutations, and central nervous system disorders.
There’s no need to suffer long-term and serious health consequences to ward off pesky mosquitoes. Choose a natural alternative that’s proven to work as effectively as DEET or in some case, MORE effectively than DEET.

NATURAL MOSQUITO REPELLENTS

CATNIP

You can drive cats wild and make mosquitoes run in terror, according to research at Iowa State University which found that the essential oil found in the herb catnip is about 10 times more effective than DEET in repelling mosquitoes

CITRONELLA

Use only pure essential oil of citronella—not fragrance oil. Oils purchased in bulk for burning are not adequate for applying topically to your skin. For your skin it is best to get a high quality citronella essential oil from a natural food store. While it’s not as effective as catnip, it’s still a good option.

GARLIC

Eat lots of fresh garlic or take it in capsules—mosquitoes can’t stand the stuff.

LAVENDER

Lavender essential oil smells great and is a commonly used and effective mosquito repellent. It’s best diluted in a carrier oil like apricot kernel, sweet almond or coconut oil. If you can find organic soy oil, it is also a good option since it also keeps mosquitoes at bay.

NEEM OIL OR NEEM SEED OIL

According to a study by the US National Research Council neem oil is more effective than DEET.  The results were confirmed by scientists at the Malaria Institute in India and in research cited in the Journal of the American Mosquito Control Association. Neem is a plant that grows in India.

ORGANIC SOY OIL

Research cited in The New England Journal of Medicine found that repellents made of soybean oil are just as effective as DEET-containing repellents. Soy oil is inexpensive and easy to find, making it an excellent choice. Plus, it is an excellent body moisturizer. As an aside, research shows that an ingredient in soy can slow the growth of body hair when applied topically. Choose organic soy oil if possible since many soy crops are now genetically-modified.

LOTUS

New research published in the Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine shows that lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) is an effective mosquito repellent and also helps kill mosquito larvae.  Since lotus grows in water it is a good option as a natural repellent in backyard ponds and water features rather than something that is applied topically.

BLACK PEPPER

New research from the same study shows that an extract (the study used an alcohol extract but black pepper essential oil would probably work too) of black pepper is effective in repelling mosquitoes.
I mix about 30 drops of the essential oils of catnip, citronella, lavender, neem and black pepper (total, so about 6 drops of each essential oil) into about 30 mL of an unscented and natural oil or moisturizer, which I keep handy in a jar. I rub a bit onto my skin prior to heading outdoors. You can also mix 30 drops of these essential oils into organic soy oil for extra protection. Always do a 24-hour skin test to be sure you don’t have sensitivities to any of the oils.
