Joseph Wright (September 3, 1734 - August 29, 1797), known to the world as the "Wright of Derby" has been acclaimed as "the first professional painter to express the spirit of the Industrial Revolution". Wright is notable for his use of light and shade to give dramatic effect to his paintings of candle-lit subjects. His adeptness to this art of chiaroscuro is displayed in these brilliant following works.
